There are different kinds of air purifiers, including the plug-in kind, which you use when living or working in small, enclosed spaces, the kind you hang on the wall, and the kind you plug into the wall. Some air purifiers use UV lights to kill bacteria, mold, and viruses, while others use filters to trap particles, like dust and pet dander.
The Media & Tech Lab tests air purifiers for performance, efficiency, and ease of use. We score ease of use including setting up, controls, and clean up, as well as how much and how quickly it filters the air. We also evaluate tank and output capacity as well as humidity levels, noise level, and filtration. According to our lab testing and consumer reviews, of all the air purifiers we have tested, these are the best air purifiers of 2022.

Air purifiers (also known as air cleaners) are devices used to clean the air in the surrounding by absorbing all harmful odors, germs and allergens such as pollen and pet dander. Most air purifiers remove the dust, mildew, pollen, smoke and dander, which you breathe in through house vents, leaving you with clean fresh air. According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, air purifiers can reduce allergy symptoms, asthma symptoms and other respiratory ailments.
The main types of air purifiers
Air purifiers are items that you can purchase for your home that will clean the air in your home. There are several different types of air purifiers, so you will want to make sure that you purchase the right one.
The first type of air purifier that you can purchase is a HEPA air purifier. This type of air purifier will trap most allergens and particles in the air. This type of air purifier uses HEPA filters, which will catch most of the particles in the air.
The second type of air purifier that you can purchase is a UV air purifier. This type of air purifier will trap most viruses and bacteria in the air. This type of air purifier uses UV lamps, which will kill off most viruses and bacteria.
The third type of air purifier that you can purchase is an electrostatic air purifier. This type of air purifier will trap particles in the air. This type of air purifier uses static electricity, which forces particles in the air to stick to the plates. These plates then attract the particles and trap them.
The last type of air purifier that you can purchase is an ozone air purifier. This type of air purifier will trap most odors in the air and kills 99.9 percent of bacteria in the air. This type of air purifier uses Ozone generators, which kill off bacteria in the air.
The 3 most important features in an air purifier
Air purifiers can be purchased in many different forms. They can come in the form of a tower, a tabletop, or a portable air purifier. There are also filter air purifiers, HEPA air purifiers, and UV air purifiers.

Germ Guardian AC5250PT 28” 3-in-1 True HEPA Filter Air Purifier for Home and Pets
The Germ Guardian AC5250PT is a great air purifier for medium-sized rooms and large rooms up to 900 square feet. It has two filters, a True HEPA filter and a carbon filter, that work together to remove 99.97% of particles as small as .3 microns, so it's effective at reducing allergens and cigarette smoke. The filter lasts about a year, and it's washable and reusable. The Germ Guardian also has a UV-C light that kills viruses, which is really nice if you're sick, and the carbon filter helps reduce odors, though it doesn't eliminate them entirely. We liked how easy it was to set up, how quiet it was during the day, and how well it performed. The only negative is that the Germ Guardian is large and heavy, so it's not like you can put it in the corner of a room; this air purifier is designed to be installed somewhere where it can stay in one place, like on the central air return.
AROEVE Air Purifiers for Home
AROEVE Air Purifiers are big, bulky, and noisy. Fortunately, they're also effective at clearing the air of smoke, pollen, dander, and other harmful allergens and dust, hair, and bacteria. There's not much you can do about the size, but the purifiers are surprisingly quiet, and they produce enough air movement to work well even in large rooms. The low price is also a big plus, and the lifetime filter warranty is hard to beat. However, our pick's biggest downside is its less-than-stellar filters. They're not supposed to last for 2000 hours, and in our tests, they only lasted about 600. That means you'll have to change them every half year or so.
AROEVE air purifiers are well-built, with attractive, modern designs and top-notch performance. The purifier we tested has a removable filter and a fan that's quieter than most, although it can be a bit loud, and it comes with remote control. Its AER function and timer are a nice touch, and we liked that it stores all your settings on a smartphone app. The downside is that the fan exhaust is at the bottom of the unit, so you'll need to dust around it regularly. This purifier is also more expensive than the others we tested, but it's the only one in our test group with a quality H13 filter. AROEVE also offers other models with ozone and carbon filters, and purifiers that can filter mold and bacteria.
LEVOIT Air Purifiers for Bedroom Home, HEPA Freshener Filter Small Room Cleaner with Fragrance Sponge for Smoke
The Core Mini is the best air purifier you can buy for your bedroom or living room. It uses three-stage filtration and 360-degree airflow to keep your home's air fresh and purified and is equipped with an aroma pad to add a subtle fragrance. The air purifier's fan is whisper-quiet, and it cleans up the air in rooms up to 400 square feet and is small enough to fit on a night stand or desk. The control unit is also very simple to operate; just press a button to turn the purifier on, cycle through 3 fan speeds, and reset the Check Filter Indicator. You can also add another one of my picks to the Core Mini to turn it into a portable air purifier, so you can use it in a hotel bathroom or on vacation.
The Levoit Air Purifiers make a significant difference in the air quality in our small office space, providing noticeably improved air quality. They are easy to use and clean, and you can control them using the provided remote control. The fan has a low noise output, and the unit runs quietly. The aroma pad is easy to swap out for a new pad, and the fragrance samples are a nice bonus for those of us who are particular about scents. The air purifiers clean the air well, and they do a good job of removing odors from pets, smoke, and other pollutants. Unfortunately, we found the aroma pad to be less effective than the internal filter at removing odors. In our tests, the aroma pad lasted about 6-8 weeks; the filter lasted about 3 months.
AIRTOK Air Purifiers for Home Bedroom Large Room with H13 True HEPA Filter
The AIRTOK Air Purifier for Home Bedroom Large Room with H13 True HEPA Filter is a decent air purifier that removes a decent amount of contaminants from the air, and it's silent and reasonably powerful, but its biggest advantage is it's small and compact, making it a good choice if you live in a small space. Its CADR rating (the amount of air the unit can filter in an hour) is much greater than the average air purifier's, and in our tests, it averaged 1.5 air changes per hour, which is on par with our other top pick, the Dyson Pure Cool Link. The AIRTOK's performance is clearly less impressive in larger rooms, though. In our tests, the purifier consistently filtered 1.5 air changes per hour in a 793-square-foot room and didn't exceed that rate until we were in a 1,244-square-foot room. It's still better than the Dyson, which averaged 1 air change per hour in the same size room.
VEVA Air Purifier Large Room - ProHEPA 9000 Premium Air Purifiers for Allergies, Smoke, Dust, Pet Dander & Odor with H13 Washable Filters - White
The VEVA Air Purifier Large Room is one of the best air purifiers we've tested for homes with pets, smokers, or lots of cooking. It's also the only model in our tests that can capture small particles, including smoke particles, that pass through most purifiers. We also like the VEVA Air Purifier Large Room's sleek design, which makes it a more attractive choice for home decor. It's quieter and consumes less energy than the Dyson Pure Hot+Cool Link, but the Pure Hot+Cool Link is a better purifier when it comes to capturing larger particles, such as pet dander, dust, and pollen.
What sets the VEVA Air Purifier apart is the combination of its HEPA and Carbon filters, which make it a true HEPA air purifier, and the fact that it captures both small and large particles. The pre-filter, dust filter, and HEPA filter are high-quality, and they last much longer than the competition's filters. The filter life is 4 times longer than the average air purifier, but it's only 1 1/2 times as long as the best air purifiers we've tested. Still, it's the best air purifier for pet dander and odor, and it's the best air purifier for cigarette smoke. The pre-filter is washable, which is a nice feature, but it makes the filter more expensive. Overall, the Air Purifier 9000 is the best air purifier for most people.
HEPA Air Purifiers for Home Bedroom, Smoke Air Cleaner with Fragrance Sponge, Lock Set, Ultra Quiet HEPA Air Purifier for Dust, Odor, Pet Dander,Smoke
The HEPA Air Purifier for Home Bedroom is a well-made, quiet, and effective machine for purifying the air in your home. It doesn't have the name recognition of more expensive air purifiers, but it offers most of the same features, plus an aromatherapy feature and adjustable light level, for less money. It rated well for overall performance in our tests for smoke, pollen, dust, and pet dander, and we were particularly impressed with the design. The air filters are easy to clean and replace, and the purifier has a lock feature for pets and kids, which we didn't have on our last pick, and a removable odor-absorbing sponge. The included aromatherapy process uses an included scent pad, which wasn't as effective as some of the other machines we tested, but we liked that it's adjustable, so you can customize the strength of the fragrance. The air purifier has a 107-square-foot coverage area, and it works well in a small bedroom or office. The purifier was quiet at low speed (28dB), but at medium or high speeds (40-54dB), it was loud enough to hear, and though it's rated for 360 square feet, it barely covered half of that in our tests. (We tested it in a 150-square-foot bedroom.) Our only real complaint with this air purifier is that its remote control is missing a volume rocker, and the on-screen menu system could use some improvement.
The HEPA Air Purifier uses true HEPA and high-efficiency activated carbon filters that are powerful enough to clean the particles as small as 0.3 micron. By using a HEPA filter, this air purifier is capable of trapping the impurities in the air. It is capable of removing pet dander, dust, pollen, odor, and other pollutants from the air. The air purifier comes with aromatherapy function that allows you to add a few drops of essential oil to the aroma pad under the air outlet. The essential oil will diffuse throughout the room, creating an aroma that will help you relax, focus, energize, and sleep. It is capable of running as near-silent 28dB at low speed. It is also designed to be energy efficient and quiet, so it wont disturb you while sleeping.
Gocheer Air Purifier for Extra Large Room with H13 True HEPA Filter 2,500 Sq ft Coverage Smart Air Cleaner for Home Eliminate Smoke Dust Pollen Mold Pet Dander Allergens Gases
The Gocheer Air Purifier is one of the best air purifiers we've tested, thanks to a combination of powerful cleaning, impressive coverage, and impressive filtration. It cleans the air in 1,102 square feet in 15 minutes (CADR 1000), the coverage area is comparable to larger air purifiers, and it's very quiet when running--we barely noticed it. The pre-filter and filter are both H13 true HEPA filters, for true HEPA performance, and there's a washable pre-filter, so you can simply change it out when it needs it. (Replacement filters are sold separately.) The smart sensor adjusts fan speeds automatically based on the room's lighting, and since you have a choice of 3 fan speeds, you can get more airflow or slower air flow if you're trying to sleep. It's Wi-Fi enabled, so you can control it through the app, and it's compatible with Amazon's Alexa voice assistant, so you can use your voice for basic operation. The Gocheer Air Purifier has a two-year warranty.
The Gocheer air purifier has great performance for the price. It cleans the air effectively, and we liked the ability to adjust the fan speed by touch. It has an automatic timer, and we liked the ability to turn the light off via the touch screen. That said, we didn't like the touch screen, which was slow and unresponsive at times and required us to hold the button for a few seconds to turn it off. Also, the 2,500-square-foot coverage isn t quite as large as we thought it would be, so if you live in a larger room, consider getting a more powerful air cleaner.
AZEUS True HEPA Air Purifier for Home, up to 1080 sq ft Large Room, UV light | Ionic Generator | Office or Commercial Space | Filter 99.97% Pollen, Smoke, Dust, Pet Dander | Auto Mode | Air Quality Sensor | Night Light
The AZEUS True HEPA Air Purifier is an outstanding air purifier, and it's well worth the money. Its attractive design, impressive performance, and versatile setup make it an excellent option for anyone looking for a powerful, easy-to-use air purifier. The True HEPA Air Purifier has a 3-step filtration system that can remove up to 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns from air, including smoke, dust, pollen, and pet dander. If you have asthma or allergies, this is a terrific purifier to keep you breathing easier. It's also great for people sensitive to chemical smells and odors from things such as paint, air fresheners, and cleaning products. The air purifier is also surprisingly quiet. In automatic mode, it quietly circulates the air in your room for 45 minutes and then shuts off automatically. It's also compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, so you can control it remotely. The remote control is also handy for adjusting the fan speed and switching between modes, such as sleep mode, filter replacement reminder mode, and ionizer mode. The True HEPA Air Purifier is pricey, but it's well worth the money.
Coway Airmega AP-1512HH(W) True HEPA Purifier with Air Quality Monitoring, Auto, Timer, Filter Indicator, and Eco Mode, 16.8 x 18.3 x 9.7, White
The Coway Airmega AP-1512HH is, simply put, a well-designed, highly capable air purifier that does a good job cleaning the air in medium to large rooms. The Coway Airmega's 4-stage filtration system, a 5-stage fan system, and sensor detection all work together to keep the air clean as you breathe it in. The machine's fan can be programmed to turn on and off 1, 2, 3, or 4 times per hour, and the timer can be set to 1/4, 1/2, 4, or 8 hours. The filter lifetime indicator has a bright LED that changes color depending on the filter's condition, and the machine's fan noise ranges from 24.4 decibels (the lowest level) to 53.8 decibels, which is quieter than the noise level of a vacuum cleaner. While its 4-stage filtration system is impressive, its multi-layer air-filter system isn't nearly as effective at reducing dust, pollen, pet dander, and other allergens as rivals like the Mi Air Purifier 2 and Samsung HW-J5100. But it does remove 99.97% of particles 0.3 microns or larger from the air, including pet dander and dust mites. It's also effective at reducing volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and our tests found that it helped keep our indoor air free of unpleasant smells. The Coway Airmega's effective at removing smoke, but it can't actually eliminate it.
Hamilton Beach TrueAir Air Purifier with Permanent HEPA Filter for Home or Office and Pets, Whisper Quiet, 160 sq ft, Black
This air purifier is quiet and effective, with an effective 99.97 percent capture of allergens, including pet dander, pollen, mold, and carpet dust. Compared with the competitors we tested, this one was the easiest to clean, thanks to its permanent HEPA filter. (The permanent filter also makes it a better choice for pet owners than models with replaceable filters.) The Hamilton Beach TrueAir is also a good deal cheaper than the GermGuardian AC4825-2 at times, and it's more versatile: it has a longer runtime than the GermGuardian and it's cheaper, too, and you can position it upright or on its side. The GermGuardian is more convenient for pet owners, though, because its HEPA filter is permanent.
iRobot® Roomba® j7 (7150) Wi-Fi® Connected Robot Vacuum
The Roomba j7 delivers pinpoint cleaning, a wide range of cleaning options, and constant intelligence. It's the first robot vacuum we've tested to earn our Editors' Choice award, and it's a clear winner across a variety of categories. The robot has 3 cleaning modes, and while it doesn't have the best battery life of any robot vacuum, it's also the first we've tested that's truly Rachio-like in that it cleans only floors. The j7 also uses iRobot Genius, a machine learning system that uses a combination of mapping, sensing, and artificial intelligence to continuously adapt to your home. The robot can also choose to run autonomously or can be commanded to clean only certain rooms, floors, or times of the day. Its cleaning performance is excellent on both carpet and hardwood floors, so much so that we'd recommend it over most other robot vacuums.
