The ice maker in your home refrigerator is a workhorse. It's responsible for making ice whenever you need it. So, whenever you do need ice, you'll want it to have sufficient ice-storing capacity. And, of course, the ice maker should produce ice quickly and efficiently.

However, not all ice makers are created equal. Some ice makers boast impressive capacity, but the only ice makers in our test lab that met our ice criteria were ice makers with drain pumps. These pumps push water to drain out of the ice maker, letting water drain directly out of the ice maker instead of forcing the water to run through a filter or collection bin. In fact, those ice makers with drain pumps did a better job of producing ice in our tests.

We test ice makers for a number of criteria, including ice-making efficiency, ice-storing capacity and ice-crushing performance. Our ice testing lab scored ice makers on our ice crush test, which evaluates how much ice the ice maker makes in one minute, and ice-making time, which evaluates how long the ice maker takes to produce enough ice for a family of four. We also tested the ice makers on our ice-storing capacity test. We tested the capacity of the largest ice cube that can be made in each ice cube
